Hallowed Concepts in Risk of Rain 2

Quick Answer

Hallowed Concepts adds Enforcer, Acolyte, trial routes, Hexes, Hallowed Items, and the N'tormat. Enable the DLC before the run. Enforcer starts available with the expansion; Acolyte needs A Broken Ritual.

Hallowed Concepts is Risk of Rain 2's expansion released on October 8, 2026. It adds Enforcer and Acolyte, new stages and trial routes, Hallowed Items, Hexes, and the N'tormat. Enable the expansion before starting a run if you want those systems to appear. Enforcer is available by default with the DLC; Acolyte requires her own unlock challenge.

For a first run, separate three decisions: which Survivor you will play, whether you will accept a Hex for a Hallowed reward, and whether you want to pursue a trial or hidden-realm route. You can encounter expansion content during an ordinary run without committing to every new challenge at once. The accompanying free update also changes existing Survivors and adds skills, so a new ability on an older character does not automatically require purchasing the expansion.

Check expansion access before planning an unlock

Hallowed Concepts requires the base game. Its content appears when the DLC is enabled for the run. If the new systems are absent, check the expansion setting before interpreting a run as evidence that an interactable cannot spawn.

Cooperative access has an additional distinction. A lobby member who owns the expansion can enable its monsters, levels, and items for the lobby. A player without the expansion cannot select its new Survivors or permanently unlock its new items, logbooks, and other content. Shared access to a stage is therefore different from ownership of a permanent unlock.

If you are joining friends, decide whether your goal is simply to experience the new encounters or to earn a specific reward on your account. That avoids reaching the end of a lengthy route and discovering that you lack the access required to select its Survivor afterward. Keep that ownership check separate from the host's expansion toggle.

Choose between the two new Survivors

Enforcer offers a straightforward starting point because you do not need to clear a separate character unlock first. His shield supplies directional protection, and Defensive Stance changes his primary attacks while reducing movement. Rally Point creates a temporary holdout area that can grant barrier to allies when kills happen inside it.

Acolyte is the locked newcomer. Completing A Broken Ritual makes her selectable. Her combat centers on glaive attacks, extracted enemy souls, Convictions, and a Litany that changes her offensive and recovery options. Her normal passive redirects healing into recoverable health instead of restoring the health bar immediately.

These mechanics produce different learning tasks. With Enforcer, practice controlling the direction of incoming attacks and moving between shielded and normal combat. With Acolyte, understand the health exchange and when to spend the Litany window. Neither character is simply a cosmetic version of an existing Survivor, and neither one's availability proves that the other has been unlocked.

For a first expansion run, you can also keep using a familiar Survivor. That lets you learn the new interactables without simultaneously learning a new character's health or shield rules. The expansion's systems are not restricted to runs played as Enforcer or Acolyte.

Distinguish ordinary stages from optional destinations

Hallowed Concepts adds three standard stages to the normal rotation. It also adds trial areas and hidden realms reached through specific portals. Those are different kinds of destinations: a stage appearing in the rotation is not the same as a hidden realm that requires an interaction chain.

Damp Caverns and Tenebrous Quagmire are among the expansion environments. You can recognize Damp Caverns by its cavern setting and large bioluminescent mushrooms. Learn the local routes and enemy sightlines when you arrive, rather than expecting a familiar stage's movement path to carry over unchanged.

Soulbound Threshold is a separate hidden realm associated with the Shrine of Descent and a Soulbinding encounter. Terminal Lucidity is another destination connected to the expansion's ritual systems. A normal Teleporter exit continues the regular run, while a special portal can change the route. Read the portal or interaction prompt before entering if you are pursuing a particular reward.

You do not need to memorize every destination before playing. It is more useful to identify what kind of route you have found: normal progression, a trial for rewards, the Acolyte unlock route, or a later hidden encounter. That classification helps you decide whether your current build and remaining resources suit the next step.

Treat Hexes as a cost attached to a reward

Hexes are penalties introduced by the expansion. A Hallowed Shrine can offer Hallowed Items in exchange for enduring Hexes. The benefit and the drawback belong to the same decision; a reward's appealing effect does not make the penalty disappear.

There are fourteen Hexes and eleven Hallowed Items in the official release content. Do not read those categories as fourteen ordinary upgrades and eleven interchangeable rarity drops. A Hex changes the run through a drawback, while a Hallowed Item supplies a useful effect tied to the expansion's acquisition system.

Before accepting a shrine interaction, identify the cost shown in the prompt and ask whether your current character can handle it. A penalty that changes combat pressure can matter differently to a character who needs to stay close, one who relies on a temporary defensive stance, and one who can keep attacking from range. That is a practical reason to read the actual interaction each time rather than accept every Hallowed reward automatically.

If you are pursuing a skin or challenge that involves Hexes, keep the challenge's requirements distinct from a normal progression decision. A run designed to complete a particular challenge may intentionally accept a drawback you would otherwise skip. It is better to choose that goal before stacking penalties than to realize later that you have made a routine run unnecessarily difficult.

Recognize Hallowed Item effects by their trigger

Hallowed Items are not all activated by the same kind of play. Some reward repeated skill hits, some respond to healing, and others support movement or holdout zones. Read the trigger before deciding whether a reward fits the Survivor you selected.

Hallowed ItemTrigger or role to recognize
Infernal MarkRepeated skill hits can soul-brand an enemy.
Corpse LilyCreates a damaging cloud during Teleporter and holdout events.
Earthbound VesselSupplies extra jumps that recharge while grounded, with armor tied to unused jumps.
Sanguine ChaliceYour bleed damage supplies healing.
Stained ScimitarHealing creates ghost blades, and the secondary skill launches them.
Vile CenserSkill hits on stunned targets release chaining damage.
Ritual HelmetSprinting builds charges for collisions with enemies.

Use this as a recognition table rather than a universal priority list. For example, an effect that depends on sprinting asks for different behavior from one tied to a holdout zone. A reward can be strong in the right situation while doing little for the action you are currently using most often.

The trigger also tells you what to watch during combat. If an item seems inactive, check whether you have actually met its condition before assuming that it is broken. A holdout effect does not behave like an always-on damage bonus, and an effect that uses healing requires you to understand how your Survivor handles that healing.

Obtain and use the N'tormat deliberately

The N'tormat is a Curio associated with collectible pages. Pages provide rituals with different effects and costs. Wake events and Winnowing trials give you ways to obtain the book and its pages, so those encounters can be useful even when you are not yet pursuing the expansion's later destinations.

Clarity refreshes skills and equipment and provides a temporary cooldown reduction. Shadow Cloak offers a period of invisibility, increased movement speed, and armor. Fanatic Summons calls Lynx Pups. These pages have different purposes, and obtaining a page is not the same as automatically benefiting from it without casting the relevant ritual.

Other pages demand greater caution. Dark Alchemy targets an item and downgrades it while producing an additional copy. Reincarnation sacrifices the user; under the correct conditions it enables travel to other locations. The word Reincarnation should not be read as a promise of a safe ordinary revive wherever you happen to stand.

When you acquire a new page, read its effect and the current casting context before using it. A ritual that changes your inventory or kills your character can have a much greater consequence than a temporary combat buff. Choose the effect because it serves a concrete purpose in the current run.

Decide whether to pursue a Winnowing or Acolyte route

The expansion's trials include the Winnowing of Survival, Predation, and Mortality. Their objectives differ, so use the active objective as your guide after entering. A trial is a discrete challenge with rewards, rather than a guarantee that the rest of the expansion has been completed.

If your immediate goal is Acolyte, obtaining the N'tormat and a page is preparation for a longer chain. You then need the Shrine of Descent before the Teleporter, the resulting Ritual Portal, the Soulbound Threshold ritual, the Anima Harvester fight, and a final healing-item offering. Bring a qualifying healing item before starting that route.

For a general first run, you can instead collect the trial rewards and continue learning the ordinary stage systems. There is no need to combine every skin challenge, new Survivor, and hidden route into the same attempt. A focused goal makes it easier to notice which interaction actually advances the outcome you want.

Separate the paid expansion from the free update

The release's free update adds unlockable skills for existing Survivors: Commando's Sabotage, Huntress's Laser Cyclone, Acrid's Cloying Breath, Artificer's Tectonic Blast, Engineer's Laser Cutter, and REX's Proliferation. Those skills expand older characters alongside the DLC's new Survivor roster.

The update also adds optional Karma that can make the Moon confrontation harder. Treat that as a difficulty choice rather than a requirement to see every new Hallowed Concepts system. If you enable it while learning the expansion, account for the more demanding final confrontation in your route plan.

Current bug fixes also matter when comparing old advice with the release. Engineer's Bubble Shield now blocks outside explosions including Voidling's laser. The update fixes Engineer turrets receiving Temporary Items and a potentially infinite Runic Lens and ATG Missile Mk. 1 interaction. Do not build a plan around those older bug behaviors as though they were guaranteed current mechanics.

Start the run with the expansion enabled, a clear Survivor choice, and one immediate objective. At each new shrine, trial, or page, identify both the reward and the cost before committing. That gives you a useful way to explore Hallowed Concepts while keeping optional challenges under your control.
