Risk of Rain 2 Shrine of Descent

Quick Answer

With Hallowed Concepts and enough N'tormat pages, activate the shrine before the Teleporter. Finish the normal encounter, overcharge to 667%, and defeat the extra boss to open the Ritual Portal. The trial is once per run.

Activate the Shrine of Descent before the Teleporter to start a Soul-binding trial. Complete the ordinary charge and boss first, then survive the overcharge to 667% and defeat the additional boss. When both requirements are complete, a Ritual Portal opens toward Soulbound Threshold. The shrine is a commitment to a different encounter and route, not an ordinary Shrine of the Mountain damage challenge.

The shrine requires Hallowed Concepts and sufficient N'tormat pages. In solo play, one qualifying page is enough. Multiplayer uses a larger team requirement: four pages for two players, nine for three, and sixteen for four. The trial can happen only once per run, so collecting additional pages after completing it does not create a second Shrine of Descent opportunity.

Check the rules before searching the stage

A Shrine of Descent is placed when the stage's Teleporter is placed at the beginning of that stage. It does not appear retroactively in the same stage simply because you collect a page later. After obtaining the necessary pages, inspect subsequent stages rather than repeatedly search an area that was generated before the requirement was met.

The run must be a standard or Eclipse run. The Soul-binding trial must not already have occurred, and no other Shrine of Descent can exist. Its location is random, so there is no single coordinate or guaranteed distance from the Teleporter that you can use to find it in every run.

A missing shrine therefore has several possible explanations. Check the game mode, the team's qualifying pages at stage entry, and whether the trial already happened. These are more useful checks than assuming every stage must show the shrine after any page pickup.

Count qualifying pages across the team

Consumed pages still count toward the requirement, but Shredded Pages do not. Casting a valid page during the stage is therefore different from losing the qualifying page entirely through an inventory change. Check the type of page and the team's combined inventory rather than count every page-shaped icon indiscriminately.

The current placement rule divides the team's qualifying page total by player count, rounds down, and requires that result to be at least the number of players. This produces the following totals:

PlayersQualifying pages required across the team
OneOne
TwoFour
ThreeNine
FourSixteen

In a group, one player holding a single page does not meet the same condition as a solo Survivor holding one. Coordinate page rewards before proceeding to a new stage if the Ritual Portal is the goal. A player who has cast a page may still contribute to the count; a Shredded Page does not fill a missing slot in that requirement.

Do not confuse the shrine's placement rule with a guarantee that acquiring a page always produces the major trial. Pages also cause lesser Teleporter catastrophes through a separate system. The presence of one of those effects does not prove that the Shrine of Descent route has been activated.

Recognize the shrine and use it before charging

The Shrine of Descent resembles a Shrine of the Mountain but has a distinctive upper structure and glowing eye. Approach and read the interaction prompt before committing. A distant silhouette is less reliable than the displayed shrine identity.

The shrine is free and can be used once. Activation displays The soul-binding trial awaits... and arms the trial for the next Teleporter activation. Because the shrine cannot be used after the Teleporter has started, that next activation is effectively the Teleporter on the same stage.

Search and activate before beginning the charge. Starting the Teleporter and then finding the shrine prevents you from adding the trial afterward on that stage. The correct location and sufficient pages do not repair that order of actions.

Before using it, decide whether your current build can handle a longer encounter and the route that follows. You will fight the normal boss and another boss, and the ordinary stage exit generally becomes unavailable afterward. The shrine is not simply a free reward to activate without considering where you intend to go.

Finish the ordinary encounter before the overcharge

The trial begins with a normal 0% to 100% Teleporter charge and the usual Teleporter Boss. Complete that charge and kill that boss. An unfinished normal boss is still an obstacle to the sequence even if you have kept charging successfully.

Once both ordinary requirements are complete, a short interlude leads to the warning that the Soul-binding trial begins and disaster is imminent. Fog appears, and another brief pause precedes the overcharge. Use that transition to check your position and nearby enemies rather than assume the event has ended.

Keep enough movement available for the next wave. If you spend every mobility charge finishing the ordinary boss, you can enter the overcharge without the ability to leave a concentrated attack. The additional phase asks you to continue fighting, so manage the earlier encounter with that continuation in mind.

Survive the charge to 667% and the extra boss

The Teleporter overcharges to 667%. Its additional 567% takes about thirty-five seconds before charge-rate modifiers. Six seconds into that overcharge, Teleporter monster spawns resume and an extra boss appears.

These are two completion requirements: the overcharge must finish, and the extra boss must die. Reaching the final charge value while the boss is alive does not open the route. Killing the boss before the charge finishes also leaves the charging requirement unresolved.

Use the same broad priorities as an extended holdout fight: keep the threatening enemies in view, maintain a route out of concentrated fire, and return to the charging area when safe. A damage setup that clears ordinary enemies quickly may still need sustained attention on the additional boss.

Do not read the charge going above 100% as an interface failure. That is part of this trial. Continue until the actual extended encounter finishes rather than leave or stop attacking because the display no longer matches an ordinary Teleporter event.

Find the Ritual Portal after both requirements finish

When the overcharge is complete and the additional boss is dead, a Ritual Portal appears ten to forty meters from the Teleporter. Inspect the area around it rather than expect the portal to be attached directly to the Teleporter's interaction point.

Ritual Portal near the completed Teleporter encounter

The Ritual Portal leads to Soulbound Threshold. That hidden realm has its own ritual waves and Anima Harvester encounter. Opening this portal is the result of the Shrine of Descent trial; it does not mean that the later arena has already been cleared or that Acolyte has already been unlocked.

If your goal is Acolyte, take the Ritual Portal and carry a qualifying healing item for the final offering after the arena. If your goal is simply reaching the hidden realm or collecting its rewards, check your inventory and resources before continuing. The next encounter is distinct from the Teleporter fight you just completed.

Understand the changed exit options

After the trial, the Teleporter normally becomes non-interactable and cannot advance you through its usual exit. Conduit Canyon is the exception, where it remains usable. A Teleporter that no longer offers the ordinary interaction elsewhere is therefore an expected consequence of the trial, not sufficient evidence that the run is stuck.

You can still use the Ritual Portal or another portal that the Teleporter would normally open after completion, such as a Blue Portal. Check the available portals before trying to repeatedly activate the disabled Teleporter.

Except on Conduit Canyon, a fifteen-meter Reincarnation zone forms around the Teleporter. Casting the Reincarnation ritual there can send the team to the stage the normal Teleporter would have reached. This is a sacrifice-based alternative with its own requirements and risks, not a harmless replacement button.

Players inside the ritual's six-meter circle die when it fires, with revive items blocked. A player holding the N'tormat must be in the circle for the transition to occur. Read that condition before using the ritual, and coordinate positioning in a group. Moving through an available portal is a different decision from committing players to that sacrifice.

Distinguish lesser catastrophes from this major trial

Acquiring N'tormat pages also creates a backlog of lesser catastrophes for future ordinary Teleporter events. These do not all represent a Shrine of Descent activation. The major Soul-binding trial clears the outstanding lesser-catastrophe backlog and can occur only once per run.

Lesser outcomes are drawn without repeats from a small set, and no more than five can apply to one Teleporter. Their effects end when the Teleporter finishes charging. An outcome can spend a curse without any visible effect, so the absence of a dramatic warning is not proof that no page-related event was counted.

The warnings help identify the active effect:

Warning or outcomeWhat to account for during the ordinary event
The dead strike backDestructible traps appear in rings around the Teleporter.
Your foes surge with necrotic mightSelected enemies can become Stygian threats.
N'kuhana's attention falls on youSome killed monsters create a hostile death-bomb threat.
Movement in the corner of your eyeAdditional Lynx enemies join the encounter.
No visible effectThe curse can still be spent without an active modifier.

Use those signs to understand the encounter you are in. A ring of traps does not by itself indicate that a Ritual Portal will appear after a charge to 667%. The shrine confirmation and the overcharge sequence identify the major trial.

Diagnose a missing route by its unfinished step

If the shrine is absent, check qualifying pages at stage entry, player count, game mode, and whether the trial already occurred. If the shrine is present but unusable, check whether the Teleporter was activated first. If the extended event is underway, check both the overcharge and the extra boss rather than focus only on the charge bar.

If the trial is complete and the ordinary Teleporter no longer works, inspect the available portals and the stage-specific exit rules. Decide which destination serves your current goal before interacting. The Shrine of Descent has done its job when the major trial finishes and its route becomes available; the objectives inside the destination are the next part of the run.
